Diet
Given both our medical conditions, we are in the process of putting together
diet plans that are nutritious for our age (mid 50's), and that take into
account diabetes, cholesterol levels, will not elevate blood pressure, and will
not contain known cancer causing agents.
That mission statement may seem negative, but we have to keep in mind that if
we start reducing and in some cases remove items from our diet, we must look for
healthier items to take their place.
For example, processed meat is typically higher in cholesterol than
non-processed slices of turkey or ham. So that's an easy replacement for
sandwiches. When making chili, use lean ground beef from your local butcher
rather than the standard ground beef from your supermarket. Or even go so far as
to buy your own cut of lean meat, trim some more, and grind your own meat.
Diet is only one component of a healthy life style. Being
active is another important one. Be sure to allow for nutrition that reflect
your activity levels.
The National Cancer Institute's Eat 5 A Day for Good Health
program is moving people closer to a cancer-fighting diet.
