Tuberculosis

Just before my eighth birthday, in November 1957, I became ill with a mysterious disease. At first the doctors could not figure our what the problem was. I don't remember much of my symptoms, just that I was always tired and little appetite.

After a while, I was sent to the Van Iterson hospital in Gouda, Netherlands, for further tests. The doctors decided early on that I should be isolated until they could figure out what my problem was.

Eventually they discovered that I had tuberculosis and arrangements were made for my transfer to a specialized care facility. Early 1958 I was transported to sanatorium Sonnevanck near Harderwijk. At the sanatorium I was treated with rest and medication until I was released in October or November 1959.

Tuberculosis (often called TB) is an infectious disease that usually attacks the lungs, but can attack almost any part of the body.
