Picture yourself awakening on a Saturday morning, rubbing the sleep out of
your eyes, slowly preparing to ease yourself into the day. All of a sudden your
radio alarm goes off, set (of course) on WORLD FM Ethnic FM, and you find
yourself instantly tossed into a swirl of the happiest deejays and bounciest
music ever heard on the airwaves. You want to lay back and relax for a few
minutes yet, but your feet have another idea, dancing merrily along to the beat,
sure that they've donned a pair of wooden shoes. No, it's not a chemical
reaction to a week's worth of coffee at work -- you've been transformed into a
Dutchie!
Since WORLD FM's sign-on in 1980, Saturdays have held a special place in the
hearts of 70,000 Albertans who share a Dutch heritage. For the past eighteen
years, program producers and hosts Dolf Hantelmann , Gerald Prinsen and Charlie
Tsang have loyally and regularly greeted, inspired, informed and entertained
their enraptured listening audience, which stretches from Edmonton to Fort
McMurray, Calgary and west throughout the Okanagan and interior B.C.
From hour number one, beginning at 9 a.m., in which Gerald presents just the
right touch of traditional Dutch sacred music (sponsored over the years by
members of several Christian Reformed churches and also by various organizations
and businesses in the Edmonton area), until the stroke of 12 noon, when Dolf and
Charlie let loose with their familiar sign-off of "da-a-a-ag!", if it's Dutch,
you're guaranteed to enjoy it much!
Emigration from the Netherlands to Canada reached its peak in the early 1950's,
made up primarily of farmhands and trades-people looking to start a new life in
a land of new opportunities. Today's immigrants arrive mainly to take up
positions in the petrochemical and research industries. But the apple never
falls far from the tree, or should we say, the finger never strays far from the
dike, and the Dutch people of Edmonton today are proof positive of strength by
association, and community.
Dolf, Charlie and Gerald joke that folks of Dutch origin love to describe
themselves as thrifty, on the one hand generously laughing at their own
shortcomings, but on the other hand never shying away from giving advice to
others! Theirs is a proud tradition of fierce individuality, a factor that has
earned them a unique place in the process of assimilation to Canadian life.
The strength of the Dutch community, as with any strong ethnic grouping, is best
illustrated in its powerful bond of spirit that rises quickly and selflessly in
the time of crisis. A few years ago, when a disastrous fire virtually destroyed
the Dutch Canadian Club, a casual request from Dolf one Saturday morning led to
the creation of a Fire Fund, which collected over $7,000.
But back to our show. The Dutch program originally signed on as a Saturday
afternoon offering, eventually easing into its Saturday morning nine-to-noon
slot. This offers sponsors a unique opportunity to access a captive listening
audience during prime shopping hours.
This is no big secret to the Dutch business community, which has reciprocally
played a big role in the success of our Dutch program. The owner of a west-end
meat shop (and our longest running Dutch advertiser) has been known to boast
that customers seem to line up just around the corner ever Saturday morning,
ready to rush into the shop minutes after his weekly specials are announced on
air!
The Dutch program on WORLD FM serves an audience that is mainly 50 and older,
who enjoy a bit of nostalgia, brought back by familiar music and news from the
country their hearts never abandoned. There are, however, younger listeners as
well tuning in every Saturday for a chance to hear contemporary Dutch artists.
This is chosen from a remarkable music collection that Dolf expands on every
visit to the Netherlands.
Dolf's contests and quizzes are especially popular on air, generating a
tremendous interest in Dutch history, geography, sports, traditional foods, and
so on. He loves to recall the time that, during one such competition, the
Edmonton Public library had been emptied of every copy of relevant reference
books on its shelves!
Gerald and Dolf have been privileged to take part in a number of significant
events involving their community over the years. For instance, Gerald emceed the
visit of Queen Beatrix to Spruce Meadows, as well as 1995's celebration of the
50th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. Dolf spent that festive period in
Holland, covering events in Apeldoorn, Amsterdam and Groesbeek. He was also
asked by the Mayor's office in Edmonton to emcee the presentation of the world's
only band on bicycles at City Hall, who later performed at the Butterdome.
Sintkerklaas, the grandfather of all Santa Clauses, brings more Dutch tradition
to Edmonton each December, dropping by several schools and taking a Saturday
morning, accompanied by Black Peter, to drop in on one of the city's traditional
Dutch stores. The events surrounding the visit are broadcast live on WORLD FM,
and our Dutch listeners know that they can expect the entire broadcast to be
done in rhyme.
Late in December it's time for the Hollandse Kerstzangavond... with a full
evening of Dutch Christmas songs and hymns, at the West End Christian Reformed
Church, which is always filled to capacity.
But of course, the grandest of events cannot compare with the heartfelt,
personal touch that each listener experiences by tuning in WORLD FM's Dutch
program... it's a Saturday morning of warmth and friendship, seasoned with
personal announcements of birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and greetings to
visitors from back home. Our mailbag is never wanting for touching thank-yous
all the way from Holland, as listeners here regularly tape the show and send it
back to friends and relatives. |

Het is Zaterdagmorgen en U wordt wakker. U wrijft de slaapjes uit Uw ogen en
bent van plan om eens rustig de dag te beginnen. Opeens gaat de klokradio aan
(die natuurlijke op 101.7 WORLD FM is afgesteld) en meteen bent U omgeven door
de vrolijkste DJ's en muziek die U ooit op de radio gehoord heeft.
U wilt nog eventjes blijven liggen maar Uw voeten hebben een ander plannetje.
Zij willen dansen en zwieren, als het ware op een paar klompen. Nee, stelt U
zich maar gerust het is geen chemische reactie van de koffie van gisteren.
Sinds het prille begin van WORLD FM in 1980 hebben de Zaterdagen altijd een
speciaal plaatsje gehad in de harten van de 70.000 mensen van Nederlandse
afkomst in Alberta. De huidige producers en presentators Dolf Hantelmann,
Charlie Tsang en Gerald Prinsen hebben gedurende al die vele jaren hun
luisteraars ge-inspireerd, ge-informeerd en vermaakt. Het zendbereik strekt zich
uit van Edmonton naar Fort McMurray, Calgary en naar het Westen door de hele
Okanagan en het binnenland van Bristish Columbia. En sinds kort ook wereldwijd

Om 9 uur 's-morgen beginnen Gerald en Wilma hun programma met traditionele
Nederlandse stichtelijke muziek (dat sinds vele jaren wordt gesteund door
diverse Christelijk Gereformeerde kerken, organizaties en bedrijven in Edmonton
en omgeving) tot 10 uur wanneer Dolf en Charlie hun gevarieerd programmna
beginnen. Om 12 uur sluiten zij het programma met hun bekende "Da-a-a-ag". Een
echte Nederlandse zaterdagmorgen. U kunt ervan verzekerd zijn dat U ervan zal
genieten.
Immigratie vanuit Nederland naar Canada bereikte haar hoogtepunt begin de jaren
1950. Immigratie bestond toen vooral uit vakmensen of zij die een agrarische
achtergrond hadden en op zoek waren om een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen in een
land met nieuwe mogelijkheden. De hedendaagse immigrant komt voornamelijk een
plaats zoeken in de petrochemische industrie of in het wetenschappelijk
onderzoek. Maar de appel valt nooit ver van de boom want de Nederlandse mensen
van vandaag in Edmonton zijn het duidelijke bewijs dat men sterkt staat door
eenheid en onderlinge verbondenheid.
Dolf, Charlie en Gerald maken wel eens grapje over het feit dat de mensen van
Nederlandse afkomst er trost op zijn om zich zuinig te noemen terwijl men zich
goed beseft dat men niet perfekt is. Desondanks schraalt men niet om anderen te
vertellen wat en hoe ze dingen moeten doen.
De Nederlandse traditie is er een van "doorzetten" hetgeen de Nederlander een
speciale plaats heeft bezorgd in het eenwordingsprocess in de Canadse
samenleving.
De sterkte en eenheid van de Nederlandse gemeenschap blijkt in het bijzonder in
tijden van crisis. Bij voorbeeld toen een brand het clubgebouw van de Dutch
Canadian Club zo goed als verwoestte. Na een suggestie van Dolf op een
zaterdagmorgen werd er een brandfonds opgericht dat meer dan $ 7,000 inzamelde.
Maar even terug naar ons programma. Het Nederlandstalige programma werd in het
begin op zaterdagmiddag uitgezonden, hetgeen langszamerhand werd veranderd tot
de huidige tijd. Deze tijd biedt de sponsors van het programma een unieke
gelegenheid om de luisteraars te bereiken gedurende de belangrijkste
winkeltijden.
De Nederlandse zaken in Edmonton spelen een grote rol in het succes van ons
Nederlandstalig programma. De eigenaar van een vlees- en deli-zaak in West
Edmonton (en ook een van de allereerste Nederlandse adverteerders) zegt dat het
lijkt alsof mensen iedere zaterdagmorgen net om de hoek in de rij staan om dan
de winkel binnen te stromen zodra zijn speciale aanbiedingen uitgezonden worden.
Het Nederlandstalige radioprogramma op CKER richt zich op een publiek dat
voornamelijk 50 jaar of ouder is en die een beetje nostalgie fijn vinden. Dat
wordt dan verzorgd door bekende muziek en nieuws uit het land dat hun harten
nooit verlaten heeft. Er zijn echter ook jongere luisteraars die iedere zaterdag
afstemmen om hedendaagse Nederlandse artiesten te horen. Dit alles wordt gekozen
uit een opmerkelijke muziekverzameling dat uitgebreid wordt na iedere bezoek aan
Nederland door Dolf.
Dolf's prijsvragen zijn ook erg populair terwijl ze ook een grote interesse
creeren in de Nederlandse geschiedenis, topografie, sport en bekende gerechten.
Gerald en Dolf voelen zich ook erg vereerd om de gelegenheid te hebben gehad
deel te nemen in belangrijke gebeurtenissen over de afgelopen jaren.
Bijvoorbeeld, Gerald was presentator gedurende het bezoek van Koningin Beatrix
aan Spruce Meadows nabij Calgary, als ook de 50 jarige viering in 1995 van de
bevrijding van Nederland. Dolf verbleef gedurende die tijd in Nederland om daar
verslag te doen van de gebeurtenissen in Apeldoorn, Amsterdam en Groesbeek. Hij
werd ook verzocht door de burgemeester van Edmonton om als presentator 's-werelds
enige muziek korps op fietsen voor te stellen, dat later een voorstelling gaf in
het Butterdome in Edmonton.
Iedere December zorgt Sinterklaas, de "grootvader" van Santa Claus voor nog meer
Nederlandse traditie in Edmonton. Hij is dan meestal vergezeld van Zwarte Piet
in een van Edmonton's Nederlandse zaken. De gebeurtenissen worden dan LIVE door
WORLD FM uitgezonden.
Later in December is het dan tijd voor de Hollandse Kerstzangavond. Een avond
vol met Nederlandse Kerstmuziek dat meestal gehouden wordt in een van de
Christelijk Gereformeerde Kerken die dan overvol zijn.
Maar natuurlijk is het grootste festijn niet te vergelijken met de persoonlijke
ervaring dat iedere luisteraar voelt als men afstemt op het WORLD FM
Nederlandstalige radioprogramma...... het is een zaterdagmorgen vol warmte en
vriendschap dat wordt verrijkt met persoonlijke mededelingen van verjaardagen,
jubilea, verlovingen en beste wensen.
